Helping Children See Clearly Today—and Protect Their Vision for Tomorrow
For many parents, it can be unsettling watching their child’s glasses prescriptions increase exponentially year after year. Near-sightedness or simply put Myopia often starts in childhood and tends to get worse as the eyes grow. At Junic Eyecare Coombs, we take proactive and evidence-based approach to help slow down the progression of your child’s myopia.
We offer different advanced myopia management treatment options including Stellest Lenses, Misight Contact Lenses, low-dose atropine therapy. This is done taking into consideration your child’s unique needs and lifestyle.
WHAT IS MYOPIA AND WHY DOES IT KEEP INCREASING?
Myopia (short-sightedness) occurs when the eye grows too long, or the front of the eye is too curved. This means distant objects—like the classroom whiteboard—can appear blurry.
In recent decades, childhood myopia has increased significantly. While genetics can play a role, lifestyle factors also contribute, including increased screen time, prolonged close-up work, and less time spent outdoors.
When myopia is not managed early, it can continue to worsen over time. Higher levels of myopia are associated with an increased risk of eye health problems later in life, such as retinal detachment, glaucoma, and myopic macular degeneration.
Early detection and proactive management are key to slowing myopia progression and supporting long-term eye health.
Advanced Myopia Management Options
At Junic Eyecare Coombs, we offer three leading evidence-based treatments that has been clinically proven to slow down the progression of myopia in children:
STELLEST LENSES BY ESSILOR LUXOTTICA
Stellest® lenses are specially designed spectacle lenses that do more than correct blurry vision — they help manage how a child’s eyes grow.
Each lens uses H.A.L.T. (Highly Aspherical Lenslet Target) technology, which incorporates hundreds of tiny, invisible lenslets. These lenslets guide light in a way that helps slow excessive eye growth (eye elongation), the key driver of myopia progression.
Clinical studies have shown that children who wore Stellest® lenses full-time experienced up to 67% slower myopia progression compared to children wearing standard single-vision lenses.
Stellest® lenses are ideal for children who want a simple, non-invasive myopia management option that fits easily into everyday life—just like regular glasses.
MISIGHT 1-DAY CONTACT LENSES
MiSight® 1 day contact lenses with ActivControl® Technology are specially designed to help slow the progression of your child’s myopia, while still providing clear, comfortable vision for everyday activities. They’re a great option for children who want the freedom to play sport, stay active, and enjoy life without glasses.
Clinical studies have shown that children wearing MiSight® contact lenses experienced a measurable reduction in the rate of myopia progression over long-term follow-up periods of three, six, and seven years.
These findings suggest that, when prescribed and monitored appropriately, MiSight® lenses can play an important role in long-term myopia management and help support better eye health as children grow.
LOW DOSE ATROPINE THERAPY
Atropine eye drops when used in very low concentrations (0.01% to 0.05% ) can safely slow down eye growth and reduce myopia progression. This is a simple non-invasive treatment often used alongside treatments like glasses or Ortho-K for enhanced results.
At Junic Eyecare, after a thorough eye examination, our optometrist would determine the appropriate dosage and schedule based on your child’s prescription, age and overall health. Atropine is showing promise but it’s not a one-size-fits-all solution. There are other things to consider before choosing atropine for your child: age, side effects like blurry vision or light sensitivity, and lifestyle.
A Personalized Approach for Every Child
No two children are the same, and neither are their eyes. At Junic Eyecare Coombs, our optometrists perform a thorough myopia control evaluation: measuring eye growth, reviewing prescription changes and discussing lifestyle factors like screen time and engaging in outdoor activities. Our optometrists would then recommend a tailored treatment plan which might include one or a combination of therapies as well as practical guidance for maintaining healthy vision habits.
