Dry eye is a common condition that occurs when the eyes do not produce enough quality tears, or when tears evaporate too quickly. This results in poor lubrication of the eye surface, leading to symptoms such as discomfort, irritation, fluctuating vision, and, if left untreated, damage to the ocular surface.
The importance of healthy tears cannot be overstated. Effective tear function depends not only on the quantity of tears produced, but also on their quality. Natural tears are made up of three key components—mucins, water, and oils—produced by specialised glands within the eye. When the balance of these components is disrupted, the tear film becomes unstable and Dry Eye Disease can develop gradually over time.
