This assessment involves an attempt to reveal if these symptoms: headaches, lightheaded, dizziness, vertigo, nausea, migraine, eye pain, eye strain, stiff neck, shoulder pain, upper back pain, post-concussive syndrome, agoraphobia, anxiety in large crowds or large buildings, or even panic attacks when driving; may in part be stemming from binocular vision dysfunction (eye misalignment).
What is Binocular vision Dysfunction?
Binocular Vision Dysfunction (BVD) occurs when the eyes are not working together as a team. Because the eyes are slightly misaligned, they send two different images to the brain. The brain then has to work much harder to combine these images into one clear picture.
This extra effort can lead to a range of symptoms, including headaches, eye strain, dizziness, motion sensitivity, difficulty concentrating, and neck or shoulder discomfort. In some people, it may also contribute to fatigue or feelings of anxiety, particularly in visually demanding environments.
Binocular Vision Dysfunction (BVD) can significantly affect people of all ages.
In children, BVD may make reading tiring or frustrating, affect hand–eye coordination, and interfere with sports and classroom performance. Some children also experience car sickness or headaches. Because the symptoms can overlap with other conditions, BVD is sometimes mistaken for ADHD, dyslexia, or recurrent migraines.
In adults, BVD may present as frequent headaches, dizziness, visual fatigue, or ongoing feelings of anxiety—especially during visually demanding tasks such as computer work or driving. These symptoms can impact daily activities and work performance if left unaddressed.
BVD symptoms can be wide-ranging and are not always identified during a standard eye exam.
HOW IS BINOCULAR VISION DYSFUNCTION DIAGNOSED
A comprehensive binocular vision assessment is the most effective way to determine whether binocular vision dysfunction is present. At Junic Eyecare Coombs we can diagnose BVD using a specialised binocular vision examination that evaluates how the eyes, brain, and body work together.
In addition to standard eye health and vision tests, this assessment may include evaluation of:
- Eye movement
- Eye teaming and tracking
- Eye focusing
- Binocular fusion
- Visual convergence
- Visual-spatial awareness
- Depth perception
